COLIN REID

Untitled R681.
Kiln cast glass and polished
69cm x 68cm

The piece I am exhibiting is kilncast glass with basalt and were developed from a period spent as artist in residence in Auckland, New Zealand. It is inspired by forms found in Maori art and the wonderful nature in New Zealand. Basalt is an almost ubiquitous material in Auckland as the city is built on around 50 volcanic cones. At the time it was used more for road construction than as an art material but I found it an ideal material to combine with glass. There is a satisfying relationship between basalt and glass as both are born in fire, one in a volcano and the other in the glass furnace.

This piece was in both in the ‘New Glass Economy’, an exhibition of glass by former Stourbridge / Wolverhampton students at Shanghai Public Library in 1999. This coincided with the completion of ‘Bamboo Scroll’, my major commission in cast glass and steel for Shanghai Library which was unveiled at the same time as the exhibition. It seems fitting
to include it in the ‘Glass Routes’ exhibition.
